Una novela sobre el mar. En la obra, que es un recuento de la vida del marino vasco-español Shanti Andía, se entremezclan historias de diferentes personajes que aportan a la obra distintos matices de melancolía marinera, de aventura, de amor y odio, todo ello traído a la memoria de este Baroja amante del mar y de su villa marinera en la costa vasca. Es muy recomendable su lectura, por distintos motivos porque el idioma es rico, impresionista, nostálgico; la acción es continua, no se para en filosofías o ejercicios de narcisismo; las imágenes son bellas; y sobre todo porque la melancolía de la obra es tal que contagia deliciosamente al lector. El paisaje es el alter ego de Baroja, refleja constantemente el estado de ánimo del autor. Prefiero, para mi gusto, Zalacaín el aventurero, pero esta obra no puede decepcionar a nadie. Si un punto en contra se le puede encontrar es, quizá, el no haber conseguido dar impresión de autenticidad a las distintas voces que intervienen, pues parecen todas la misma voz del autor, aportando distintos matices de expresión de un mismo alma. También debo decir que el autor evita justo a tiempo que la obra derive demasiado hacia el melodrama telenovelesco. Lea a Baroja no le decepcionará.

There's a reason Baroja isn't better known.

I had been wanting to read some Pio Baroja since coming across an old interview in "Time" in which a post-Nobel Hemingway praised Baroja as a master sylist "Allow me to pay this small tribute to you who taught so much to those of us who wanted to be writers when we were young. I deplore the fact that you have not yet received a Nobel Prize, especially when it was given to so many who deserved it less, like me, who am only an adventurer."

But this was one of those books that was a lot better before I actually read it, it you know what I mean. Shanti Andia is a wandering sailor caught between his love for his native Basque country and his determination to get to the bottom of what happened to his sailor uncle, whose footsteps Shanti would like to follow.

Unfortunately, most of this short novel is talk, talk, talk. Instead of showing you -- as Hemingway did well -- Baroja tells you. And he tells you in a way that would seem clunky and unforgiveable were you to come across it in Hemingway.

Here's a sample of what I'm talking about "My boredom and desperation were merging to form a melancholy cloud which enveloped my brain. . . . The fog of melancholy was advancing on my soul, and all my ideas were tinged with a sentimentalism that was altogether ridiculous." (p. 117)

Hemingway would have at least communicated this using the rain, or an empty room, or something -- rather than simply telling you. Thinking about this helps me understand why Hemingway is well-known and Pio Baroja isn't. But who knows? Maybe Baroja can get away with this in Spanish, while it won't work in English.

By the way, if Hemingway owes any debt to Baroja, it's in the thematic selection of material like Hemingway's, Baroja's principals are typically rootless dreamers and aventurers. I think this is what Hemingway meant. It's hard for me to see any link in narrative style, as the above quote implies. Baroja's sentences are nothing like Hemingway's.

By the way, this isn't easy Spanish.
Un libro de cuentos cortos muy bien escritos con temas marinos, aventuras y un poco de amor.
Bueno para pasar el rato.
